Locally owned and operated by Jon and Lucy Dillon for the past 27 years, Lucy Dillon for Brides/Crafty Cat is Mackay’s original invitation and papercraft specialist.
When Lucy married Jon Dillon in 1983, there was no dedicated supplier of wedding stationery in Mackay; couples had the option of ordering stationery from Brisbane or making their own. Not liking the samples from Brisbane, Lucy chose to draw on her secretarial typesetting skills and natural creativity to create her own.
When the Dillon’s wedding caterer began to show other Mackay couples Lucy’s stationery and those couples began to ask where they could find similar stationery, Lucy saw an opportunity to help other Mackay couples and fill a hole in the market. In 1984, she opened Lucy Dillon for Brides, a wedding consulting and stationery business, from an office in the Dillon’s new home.
The service proved popular with local couples and in 1990, Jon left his job to help Lucy full-time.
The continued growth of customers and an expansion into bomboniere, cake tops, candles, guest books, car decorations, tulle and other wedding accessories meant Lucy Dillon for Brides soon outgrew the office in the Dillon’s home and in 1995, the business moved to new premises on Harbour Road.
Sourcing specialty papers for her invitation designs exposed Lucy to the papercrafts of stamping and scrapbooking in the early stages of their modern revival. Lucy embraced the crafts enthusiastically and soon the products associated with them eventually caused the business to again outgrow its premises.
In 1998, Lucy Dillon for Brides moved to the corner of Victoria and Carlyle Streets on the south side of the Pioneer River. The move also saw the birth of the Crafty Cat name to better reflect the fact that Lucy Dillon for Brides was no longer just for brides.
Lucy Dillon for Brides/Crafty Cat moved to its current premises at 96 Victoria Street in 2004 when Jon and Lucy seized an opportunity to move into the City Heart. There you’ll find an amazing range of supplies to make invitations for any occasion; wedding stationery; scrapbooking, stamping and other papercraft products; cake decorating supplies; party accessories; and more!
